Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. is looking to replace a high-tech search and rescue spotlight and corresponding software in the department’s newest helicopter.

The equipment comes with about a $500,000 price tag, which Police Chief Vince Balbo said the department has on hand in the sheriff’s sale fund for the purchase. He asked the county council during its work session Thursday to approve the appropriation so they can go forward with the purchase.

“It’s a typical piece of equipment we use to find victims in searches…,” Balbo said. The search light is used both on land and on the water to search for missing victims and suspects who may be on foot.

Balbo said the department cannot go out for quotes to get a better price on the equipment because there are no other manufacturers making a comparable item.
