RED BLUFF, Calif. – A helicopter is about to take flight as part of the Tehama County Sheriff’s aviation unit. It will offer a new tool that can be used across our area.

This is the Bell UH-1H helicopter that was acquired from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana. It was acquired at no cost through the military surplus program.

It will be used primarily as a search and rescue vehicle. On Thursday the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office will brief the Red Bluff Airport Commission on this new addition.

The sheriff’s office said the helicopter will be equipped with a brand new FLIR system to pick up heat signatures during searches. The system is valued at $600,000 dollars and was donated by a police department in the Netherlands. The helicopter will be paid for through grants.
